Party Girl
Mary is arrested during an illegal party that she has organised. Her godmother pays her bail, but insists that Mary settle the debt by working in the New York public library branch that her godmother runs. At first, Mary fails miserably, being especially inept at grasping the Dewey decimal system for classifying books. The eccentric party girl is much more interested in personally integrating an attractive Lebanese falafel vendor, or setting up a gig in a club for her roommate, DJ Leo. But then she discovers that the Dewey system can also be used to organise LPs.
Parker Posey embodies the “Gen X Holly Golightly” in this kindred reboot of the classic fashion plate. She is as iridescently colourful as her pantyhose and as hot as her Gaultier leather pants as she moves through the underground club scene. At the same time, this indie movie mimics a screwball comedy and, as the director commented, “the story of a woman who finds her passion, a woman who finds a job that suits her” – meanwhile proving herself as a pioneer of the modern “librarian core” character.
